Are international schools eligible for free tuition?
Some international schools are eligible for free early childhood education and care. Under the Cabinet Office's "New System for Supporting Children and Child Rearing," fees for children aged 3 to 5 who use kindergartens, daycare centers, and certified child care centers became eligible for free fees from October 1, 2019.
However, since international schools are equivalent to "unapproved childcare facilities," they are actually "reduced" rather than "free. In addition, not all international schools are eligible. We recommend that you contact the school of your choice directly to confirm whether or not it is eligible for the free (or reduced) subsidy.
To be eligible for free (reduced)
To be eligible for free (reduced) childcare, you are required to obtain "certification of need for childcare" from your local municipality.
To receive this certification, the guardian's employment status and other factors will be examined. Please check with your local municipality for proof that you are working 46 hours or more per month, or that you need childcare for reasons such as childbirth, illness, or nursing care.
What is the amount that will be waived (reduced)?
For children between 3 and 5 years of age, up to 37,000 yen per month is free of charge. For children between the ages of 0 and 2, the monthly fee of 42,000 yen is waived for those in households exempt from resident tax.
However, since childcare fees at international schools vary from facility to facility, if the actual cost of childcare exceeds these amounts, the excess will be borne by the student.
In addition to the free (reduced) childcare fees, there may be additional costs such as enrollment fees, textbook fees, and bus transportation fees. Please note that, in principle, such expenses are to be borne by the applicant.
