Are international schools eligible for free tuition?

Some international schools are eligible for free early childhood education and care.

Under the Cabinet Office's "New System for Supporting Children and Child Rearing," fees for children aged 3 to 5 who use kindergartens, daycare centers, and certified child care centers will be free of charge from October 1, 2019.

However, since international schools are equivalent to "unapproved childcare facilities," they are actually "reduced" rather than "free.

To be eligible for free (reduced)

To be eligible for free (reduced) childcare, you must receive "certification of need for childcare" from your local municipality.

You should check with your local municipality as you need to meet the requirements such as working 46 hours or more per month.

What is the amount that will be waived (reduced)?

For children between 3 and 5 years old, up to 37,000 yen per month is waived.

In addition, up to 42,000 yen per month is waived for children aged 0 to 2 from households exempt from resident tax.
