  • “What kind of system is the dependent visa?”

“What kind of people are eligible for a dependent visa?”

I think many people do not know what to do to obtain a dependent visa in Japan. There are only a limited number of people eligible for the family visa, so be sure to check who is eligible.

This time, we will introduce an overview of the dependent visa and how to obtain a dependent visa in Japan. We will introduce the documents required to apply for a dependent visa, whether it is possible to work with a dependent visa, and how to change a dependent visa to a work visa.

    What is a dependent visa?

A dependent visa is a visa granted to a family member of a person working in Japan. (In other words, this refers to dependents of workers.)

A working person's family includes their spouse and their children. Please note that this does not apply to siblings or parents of workers. This is an easy point to get wrong.

It is also necessary to clarify that the relationship is between a dependent and a dependent. You will need proof that you are married or a child of the family.

Documents required for family visa application

The documents required to apply for a dependent visa are available on the Immigration Services Agency website, so please check there for more information.

The required documents listed on the Immigration Services Agency website are as follows. Many documents are required. In particular, it is easy to forget that the size of the photo is specified and that there is a return envelope, so be sure to pay attention to the small details.

1 Application form for issuance of Certificate of Eligibility (1 copy)

    2 Photo (length 4cm x width 3cm) 1 leaf

    3.Reply envelope

4 Any of the following documents proving the status relationship between the applicant and the dependent:

    (1) One copy of family register

    (2) 1 copy of marriage registration acceptance certificate

    (3) Marriage certificate (copy) 1 copy

    (4) Birth certificate (copy) 1 copy

    (5) Documents corresponding to (1) to (4) above as appropriate

    5. One copy of the dependent's residence card (including the alien registration certificate, which is considered a residence card) or passport.

6 Documents proving the occupation and income of the dependent

7 Presentation of a document proving your identity (identification card, etc.)

How to apply for a dependent visa

Applications are made at the Immigration Bureau.

For more information, please visit the Immigration Bureau website and contact us.

The application location may change depending on where you live in the country, so we recommend checking the official website.

Please also note that there are two ways to apply, depending on where the parents and children are located.

    • Application for permission to change residence status (if family members are already in Japan)

According to the website of the Immigration Services Agency, the application period is ``from the time the reason for changing the status of residence occurs to before the expiration date of the period of stay.'' Please be careful not to miss the applicable date.

    • Application for Certificate of Eligibility (if family members come to Japan from overseas)

According to the website of the Immigration Services Agency, regarding the submission period, it states, ``Please submit your application well in advance so that you can receive it before entering Japan.'' Be prepared so you don't rush at the last minute.

Can I work with a dependent visa?

Those who have obtained a dependent visa will also be able to work in Japan.

You will be able to work once you have been granted permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted. However, please note that time is limited.

Those with a dependent visa and permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence are required to work within 28 hours a week. If you exceed the specified time, various negative effects will occur, so be sure to adhere to it properly.

How to change a dependent visa to a work visa

In order to convert a dependent visa to a work visa, you will need to obtain a certain visa.

There are three typical visas: student visa, highly skilled professional visa, and specific visa.

For example, if you want to obtain a highly skilled professional visa, you must engage in the following activities:

Highly skilled professional visas fall under the following:

Advanced Academic Research Activities “Advanced Professional No. 1 (A)”

Activities to conduct research, research guidance, or education based on contracts with public and private institutions in Japan

Highly specialized/technical activities “Highly skilled professional No. 1 (B)”

Activities to engage in work that requires knowledge or skills in the field of natural science or humanities based on a contract with a public or private institution in Japan

Advanced Management and Management Activities “Highly Skilled Professional No. 1 (C)”

Activities involving business management or management in public and private institutions in Japan
